Lopapeysa

Wie ich euch ja schon hier angekündigt habe, möchte ich euch heute endlich mal meine beiden Lopapeysa zeigen. Erst wenige Tage  in Island, las ich in einem isländischen Magzin, dass es in der Branche einige schwarze Schafe gibt (größere Anbieter), die diese Pullover in China produzieren lassen. Skandal! Diese Pullover sind sowas wie eine isländische Marke; sie sind nicht nur beliebt unter Touristen, auch die Einheimischen lieben diese Pullover. Das sieht man auch, wenn man in Island unterwegs ist. Überall begegnen einem diese wunderschönen und warmen Pullover. Das Wichtigste ist also die isländische Wolle und, dass sie auf jeden Fall handgestrickt sind.

As I told you here, I would like to show you my two Lopapeysa. I was only few days in Iceland as I read in an Icelandic magazine that some rogue firms let produce these sweaters in China. Scandal! These sweaters are sort of like an Icelandic trademark and not only the tourists love them, they are popular among the Icelanders, too. You can see them everywher, when you are on the road in Iceland. Everywhere you encounter this beautiful and warm sweater. The most important thing is the Icelandic wool and that they are hand knitted.

Traditionell werden sie aus schwarzer, brauner, grauer, beiger und weißer Wolle hergestellt, weil dies die typischen Farben der Schafe sind. Es gibt sie aber auch in anderen Farben. Die Wolle wird nicht gesponnen, ist dadurch leicht und robust.  Außerdem haben die Pullover keinerlei Nähte, werden also am Stück gestickt. Eigentlich bin ich seit meiner Kindheit wollgeschädigt, soll heißen ich bin war äußerst empfindlich auf kratzige Wolle, was meine Mutter und Oma oft an den Rand der Verzweiflung gebracht hat, wenn sie auf Wollkauf mit mir waren.

They are made traditional by black, brown, grey, beige and white wool because these are the colour of the sheeps. But you can find any other colour. The wool isn’t spun which makes it robust and light. Besides the sweaters have no seams at all. Actually I am was very sensitive to wool since my childhood, which brought my mum and grandma to the verge of dispair often, when we were out for selling wool.

Darum war es auch nicht meine erste Priorität, so einen Pullover aus Island mitzubringen. Doch in einem abgelegenen Gästehaus in den Westfjorden lagen ein paar Pullover zum Verkauf aus. Und es war ein toller dabei, den ich sogleich probierte und er passte, und das Kratzen hielt sich auch in Grenzen, man hat eh was Langärmeliges drunter! Ich sprach den Gastgeber auf diese Chinasache an. Er fand das auch skandalös und versicherte mir, dass die Pullover von Frauen aus seiner Verwandtschaft gestrickt wurden. Daran hatte ich auch keinen Zweifel; die kleinen, charmanten Unregelmäßigkeiten waren mir längst aufgefallen.

So it wasn’t my first priority to buy such a sweater in Iceland. But in a remoted guesthouse in the Westfjords some sweaters were for sale. And I found a nice one which I tried on and the scratch kept in reasonable limits. You wear something long-sleeved beneath it, anyway. I responded to our host about that China case. It was a scandalous fact for him, too. And he assured me that these sweaters were hand knitted by women from his relatives. I hadn’t any doubt because I noticed the small, charming irregulataries by now.

Den zweiten Lopapeysa kaufte ich an der Südküste, er ist grau und hat ein markanter gezeichnetes Muster. Der nächste Lopapeysa wird auf jeden Fall eine Strickjacke. Ist ja auch sehr praktisch, und ich freue mich jetzt schon drauf, in die Riesenauswahl einzutauchen. I bought the second Lopapeysa at the South Coast. It’s grey with a more marked pattern. My next Lopapeysa will be a cardigan which is very practical, too. And I’m really looking forward to dive into the huge range. Should you be a knitting freak and have the courage to knit such a sweater you could design your own Lopappeysa together with the knitting pattern on the site of knittingpatterns.is. You’ll find Icelandic wool in the Internet, e.g. here, here or here. And I read somewhere that people some practices those knitting very much, make a Lopapeysa within 35 h.
